Understand what Gmail deletion changes and what it does not
Deleting Gmail is narrower than deleting the entire Google Account: your Gmail address and mail are affected, while other Google services can remain tied to the account. Keep a clear mapping between the old login/contact address and the destination address before anything is removed.
Move recovery links away from the Gmail address
Gmail service is removed from the account after the deletion flow is completed. You need another email address to continue using the Google Account. Use Gmail but keep your Google Account deletion to audit where the old address is still a username, recovery contact or password-reset destination.
Update accounts that still send sign-in mail to Gmail
Messages and Gmail access are no longer available through the deleted Gmail service. Before Gmail but keep your Google Account deletion, export mail, contacts or records you cannot recreate and verify the archive outside the original mailbox.
Export messages and records you may need later
Mail in the Gmail service is the key data at risk; other Google data is not automatically the same as Gmail deletion. Review purchase accounts and recovery notifications separately so financial or security messages do not keep going to the old identity.
Check billing, receipts and important notifications
Third-party subscriptions billed elsewhere are separate from Gmail deletion. Update team directories, shared folders and delegated roles that identify the old address before removing it.
Test the Google Account without relying on Gmail
Change the email address on banking, shopping and social accounts. Check recovery email and 2FA settings. Finish Gmail but keep your Google Account deletion by testing mail delivery, normal sign-in and recovery separately from a clean session.
