Inventory every account that still trusts the old number
Start with accounts that can send login or recovery codes by SMS: email, banking, password managers, social networks and messaging services are the highest-priority examples. An old number left on a recovery profile can become both a lockout risk and a security risk if that number is later reassigned.
Add the new number before removing the old one
Where a service allows it, register and verify the new number while the old number still reaches you.
Keep at least one recovery method that is not SMS
A phone-number change is safer when another trusted route already works. Verify an authenticator, passkey, backup code, recovery email or trusted device before the old SIM or number stops receiving codes, and store backup credentials somewhere independent of the phone being changed.
Move messaging and carrier-linked services separately
Messaging apps and carrier-billed services can have their own number-change or transfer flows. Review WhatsApp and any subscription or service tied directly to the carrier account instead of assuming that updating the main phone number automatically updates every connected service.
Test sign-in from a second device
After updating the new number, perform a signed-out or second-device test on the accounts that matter most. The goal is to prove that codes, recovery prompts and alternate sign-in methods reach you without relying on the old number.
Retire the old number only after the dependency list is clear
Keep the old route active during the transition when practical, then remove it from accounts only after the new number and backup recovery methods work.
